Claire Foy's portrayal of Margaret, the Duchess of Argyll V. the Duke of Argyll reflects a controversial case of the era, where the rights and wrongs of marriage pose an unsolvable human dilemma. Viewed through morden lens today, Margaret is rather a victim of institutional misogyny in a patriarchal society and a pioneer of the sexual liberation movement than the unfaithful wife and promiscuous woman condemned by the society a century ago. Their marriage is a product of that era in Britain, reflecting merely exchanges of interests and the game of the wealthy and aristocratic. On one side, as the aristocrat‘s wealth is dwindling, marrying for financial gain to maintain a life of leisure and privilege; to him, the marriage is merely a tool for acquiring wealth. On the other side, for the wealthy heiress, the noble title holds its own allure: such marriages are more about a contractual agreement. Thus, fidelity and responsibility to marriage are not the true sins and punishments leading to their downfall. So how does this high-society marriage break the rules of the game, ending in mutual humiliation when the Duke and Duchess and became front-page news? The Duke, once a prisoner of war, suffers from severe personality defects and mental issues, coupled with a string of problems such gambling, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Margaret discovers this after marriage and learns from the Duke's ex-wives that he's a habitual offender who exploits women for their wealth and then discards them; knowing that he's a cruel hunter. This is also related to Margaret's own character; indeed, she tried to maintain the marriage, and the Duchess is determined to outsmart her husband. Her most fatal flaw is her thirst for victory and conquest; she escalates the pain of marriage, sinking deeper into it——her diary records every sexual conquest, with each conquest being a trophy. Those who refuse to surrender, whether male or female, seldom have a good outcome; Napoleon and Hitler are prime examples. Their shared trait of gambling for victory is their greatest commonality—neither is willing to give up, both wanting to conquer the other, thus unfolding scenes of twisted humanity and rational confrontation.
